50’s were not the times usage of photographs in
advertising was often. The main way of creating images was illustrations. I
think the possible problem it created was the made ads "mono type".
There is a very few of photographed ads but illustrators was the main image
creators of advertising world in 50's. And also colorized ads were not as
popular as 10 or 20 years later according to printing technologies but we
cannot say they did not exist. There were colored ads but it was in some parts
of visuals and it used for making ads more noticeable. The 50’s in the
United States were a time of constant expanding of advertising and media tools,
and illustration became a common and popular method of transferring ideas there
too.
When illustration rules the advertising world*
Also there is one of few examples of photographed ads of
that decade. The photographs quality showed that why illustration was the first
choice in that era. Actually this is not about photograph quality more than
that it is about printing quality of that period. The printing type was the offset
which is the fastest way of creating newspapers. There was ways of creating
high quality images in 50's but you need to be fast if you are printing a
newspaper. Offset printing also evolves in time and now we can see high quality
images created with that type of print.
History of offset printing*
