50’s of the Turkish Newspaper Advertising- The Language

The most separative thing in 50’s newspaper advertising content is language. During those period copywriters was using a kind of Turkish which we cannot easily accommodate nowadays. Of course it can understandable but not easy on the eye. Every language changed little bit in the time. It is about new words which borrowed from other languages and changing cultural environment. There are some of the lexical changes in Turkish advertising language.

The word I underline with red means "usually" and today if we need to use in advertising copy we probably use the word "sıklıkla". Also the word of "kabahat" which means "fault" can replace with "sorun" apart of that era.

“Cereyan” means electricity and it is an old fashioned way to explain it. It could probably write as “Elektrik” to suit our minds. Of course in that period the language was spoken and written like that but it looks weird when we are looking them today.

50’s of the Turkish Newspaper Advertising- The Layout

In 50’s newspapers was the most important medium of the advertising. With the evolution of the print technologies, people started to saw colorful prints. But the coloring was only sectional and not gives the impression of real colored prints. Hurriyet as like today was the flagship of the newspaper advertising and they had the best print “technology”. Usage of photographs in the prints was almost nonexistent. The main way of creating images was illustrations. There where many kinds of prints also there were some pioneers of todays mostly pictured and short texted ads.  Especially Hurriyet gives pretty much area for advertising. Everyday in 50’s people saw almost one page filled with ads in Hurriyet’s 6 page layout and that page wasn’t the only page contains ads. There are many other small ads placed to other pages. This layout was showed differences in rare occasions but mostly it looks like what we mentioned here. Rest of the world, especially USA was not very different in creating ads. They were commonly used the illustration* for creating images. But if there is need to compare them with Turkey, they were started earlier to general coloring.

50’s of the Turkish Newspaper Advertising- Foreign Companies in Turkey

There were many foreign companies and producers publishing their ads in 50's newspapers. I think Turkey was the perfect market for them in 50's because of it was young and developing republic and local production was not at its best. Not surprisingly many of those companies are still in the Turkish market and it’s interesting to see the early ads they gave after 60 years.
